Self-Care Tips to Kickoff 2022 - Cavill & Wicks

Self-Care Tips to Kickoff 2022

Hello 2022! It’s finally here. I think we can all agree that we've never been more ready for a fresh start and some rest and relaxation! So, let's make the year 2022 the year of ME. It's time to put yourself first because we all need to take better care of ourselves.

At Cavill & Wicks we have created two new candles to be the centrepiece of your own at home-oasis. Our new Amalfi Lemon & Bamboo and Black Coconut & Bergamot candles.  Amalfi Lemon & Bamboo will transport you to Italy's Amalfi Coast with a refreshing combination of zesty lemon, sea salt, orange bergamot, creamy avocado and green bamboo.  Our luxurious Black Coconut & Bergamot is reminiscent of a tropical sunrise on a warm coastal morning. Milky coconut and sensual bergamot intertwine with fresh pineapple, smooth amber and light vanilla.

We've put together some tips below to help you get the most of your self care this year.

AT-HOME HYDROTHERAPY SPA

Creating a soothing hydrotherapy spa at home is easier than it sounds and can make self-care simple if you have the space. It doesn't take much to transform a regular bathtub into a luxurious spa. Here are our top tips to help you improve your bath experience and create your perfect spa.

1. Dim the lights, and create ambiance with a Cavill & Wicks luxury candle. Choose your favourite scent to provide the perfect setting to unwind. Add smaller tea-light candles for an extra relaxing atmosphere. Then add a sea soak or bubble bath to help soak your muscles & add to the soothing experience.

2. Add music! Listening to a relaxing playlist like this one can help set the mood and ease stress while you soak.

3. Have a deeper bath by adding an overflow drain cover. We love this one to get a few extra inches of warm water to soak in!

4. Add a Breathable Back Support Bath Pillow to your tub to make your soak more supportive and comfortable.

5. Bring in some extra support for your favourite items like books, wine or iPad with a Bamboo Bath tray. This one is a staple for us!

6. Turn your bath into the ultimate at-home hydrotherapy spa with a bubbling bathtub massage mat.

THE MEDITATION EXPERIENCE

Something that always helps give us some me-time is meditation. It provides a centred sense of calm when the world feels upside down. Meditation is heightened when you add smell to the mix. It's said that burning Palo Santo or Nag Champa before meditating helps clear your mind and energy of negativity. Having scent present can help your mind focus on relaxation and less on what’s going on around you. Even just 10 minutes a day can help give your brain a break.

Here's are a few tips to help make the most of your meditation experience.

1. Listen to our favourite meditation playlist on Spotify by Meditation Station.

2. Choose a time to meditate and stick to it!

3. Create a designated meditation space.

4. Go into your meditation without expectations.

5. Promote deeper relaxation with a Tibetan Singing Bowl.

EXTRA LONG SHOWERS

Not everyone has access to a bathtub or a spa space. In that case, try and make time for yourself with an extra long, extra hot shower. Did you know that a shower with hot water and steam produces negative ions? This is one of the reasons why people often need to take showers to wake up in the morning. Negative ions are very beneficial for the human body. They clear the air of airborne allergens such as pollen, spores, viruses and bacteria. They also create biochemical reactions in the body that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping alleviate depression and stress and boosting our moods.

Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your relaxing shower!

1. Create relaxing lighting by dimming lights and lighting luxurious candles.

2. Hang a beautiful shower curtain.

4. Dry brush your body for a full-body massage effect. This is our favourite one!

5. Embrace Aromatherapy by adding Cavill & Wicks shower steamers to sooth your soul, or recharge your batteries.

Cheers to making the most of self-care in 2022! Wishing everyone a safe & happy new year.

The Story Behind Wild Poppy & Peach for Down Syndrome Awareness Month - Cavill & Wicks

The Story Behind Wild Poppy & Peach for Down Syndrome Awareness Month

Introducing Wild Poppy & Peach. A joyful blend of wild, red poppies and juicy peaches accented with sparkling Prosecco, bright waterfruit & zesty bergamot.

We created this candle specifically for the month of October because it’s Down Syndrome Awareness month. This particular awareness month is important to me because of my sweet, little niece Poppy Love, who has Down Syndrome. Today is her birthday and this candle is for her.

Let me tell you a little bit about Down Syndrome Awareness month, a wonderful non-profit called Ruby’s Rainbow and a little bit about Poppy.

Poppy Love
My niece Poppy is five years old, and today is her birthday!  She’s teeny, tiny & is full of spice and wonder.  Poppy is beautiful, smart & kind. She loves music & dancing - especially to Taylor Swift or rap. She has a wonderfully healthy self-esteem and loves to brush her hair (or anyone else for that matter). Her favourite thing to do is to throw rocks in the water and she has zero fear of our 150lb dog Stella and welcomes her licks & kisses. She can recite the entire Trolls, Moana & Frozen movies and she enjoys her own company and independence but she also loves to play with her cousins & her sister. She's affectionate and is generous with her hugs & kisses to those that she loves. Poppy is happy, she is capable and she is smart and I can not wait to see the things she accomplishes! We love you Poppy Love!

Why We Celebrate Down Syndrome Month
The month of October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month and is a wonderful opportunity to spread awareness and celebrate people with Down Syndrome and their capabilities. It was first designated in the 1980's and has been organized every October ever since. People with Down syndrome are just like everyone else. They have similar dreams and goals, they want to have successful careers & families. They can drive, go to work, college, go on dates & get married!

Ruby’s Rainbow
A portion of the proceeds of this candle will go toward a wonderful organization called Ruby's Rainbow. Ruby's rainbow is a non-profit dedicated to providing scholarships for students with Down Syndrome, spreading awareness of their capabilities and supporting their dreams! Ruby’s Rainbow have awarded over $1.5 million in scholarship funds and over 480 scholarships. Please, read more about them here.

Happy Birthday Poppy!

TIPS TUESDAY: Re-Using Your Glass Candle Jars - Cavill & Wicks

TIPS TUESDAY: Re-Using Your Glass Candle Jars

Today we are talking about cleaning & re-using your candle jars. We ❤️ to re-use and recycle to reduce waste, so these are great ways to make sure your jars don’t end up in the landfill.

Our beautiful candle jars are also heavy based whiskey tumblers! So you can clean them and use them as glassware, as small planters, vases, storage for makeup brushes, toothbrushes, pencils, etc.

First, you’ll need to clean them. Use a knife or spoon to scrape out the excess wax. Then fill the jar with hot water & dish soap and scrub the rest out. Our wax is soft & natural and therefore has a low melting point, making is easy to wash.

Next, remove the wick holder. Slip a knife underneath and pop it off. This should be easy after the heat of the water. Now peel off the labels and use rubbing alcohol to remove any sticky residue. That’s it! Now you have a beautiful, reusable glass jar!

Tips Tuesday: Washing Up Spilled Wax

It’s #tipstuesday and today we are talking about cleaning up spilled wax, because hey - accidents happen.

One of the many things we love about coconut/soy wax blends is how simple they are to clean up. For the most part, soap and water will do the trick removing it from almost any surface. For spills on clothing, scrape off excess wax and toss them in the washing machine (or sink) with some laundry detergent and a dish washer tablet. The soap and warm water will clean up the remaining wax and the dishwasher tab will pull the fragrance oils from the fabric.

If wax spills on carpet, you can use one of two methods depending on the supplies you have available to you. 1. Use the same technique above to remove excess wax and moisture. If you have a carpet cleaner, use a small amount of dish washing liquid or dishwasher detergent along with your carpet cleaning solution to shampoo the remaining wax/oil out of the carpet. Or: 2. Apply a thick layer of baking soda (corn starch also works if you don't have baking soda).  Wait for about half an hour to an hour to let the baking soda sit and absorb the oil. When ready, scrub the baking soda with an old toothbrush, grout brush or dish washing brush. The baking soda will likely clump up as it absorbs the oil – which is a good thing. If the stain is a particularly tough one, you may need to repeat this step a couple times. When the baking soda is all clumped up, reapply more baking soda until there is no more oil to soak up.  There should still be some baking soda residue left over on top of the stain. The next step is to apply some soap and water (dish washing soap works wonders on oil) and wash out the remainder of what's left on the carpet.

For spills on hard surfaces, just wait for the wax to dry and scrape it off with a credit card and wipe down with soap and water.

Check back for more tips & tricks next week!

Tips Tuesday: Blooming & Changes in Your Candles

Welcome to another addition of Tips Tuesday.  Today we are talking about blooming & the appearance of small changes that can appear in Coconut/Soy candles.

We love coconut wax candles for a lot of reasons. They're cleaner, they burn longer, and have a more even burn compared to traditional soy candles. Coconut wax blends also have beautiful scent throw that fills the room up nicely.  They have a beautiful, creamy presence that can take on the slight colour of the fragrance oil/essential oil colours and over time and with varying room or shipping temperatures natural waxes can change slightly in appearance.
For one, wax can sweat out excess oils (mostly common in soy) which is completely normal and often the wax will begin to “bloom” or create a marbled or frosted look in places. Ever notice how the majority of soy/natural wax candle companies have frosted or coloured jars or overly large labels? This is sometimes why; to hide some of these 'imperfections' that occur in natural wax products.. We however, think blooming is beautiful as do many candle connoisseurs because it shows them that they have a natural, clean burning candle!

This ‘blooming’ is simply small amounts of natural wax crystallizing back to its more natural state. To get technical: the hydrogenated process that wax goes through converts some of its fatty acids from unsaturated to saturated and changes the melting point of the oil making it solid at room temperature. When small amounts of this oil begin to "age" and change back to its natural state; blooming or frosting can occur. This can happen in as little as a few days, or not at all.
This NORMAL & COMMON characteristic of natural waxes DOES NOT affect the performance of your candle or the beautiful scent throw we work so hard to create as candlemakers. Blooming happens more so in Soy wax blends, and because our candles are a mix of Coconut and Soy - you may see this characteristic appear in some of our candles over time.
If you aren't a fan of blooming, storing your candle out of direct sunlight and ultra violet light and trying to keep it protected from drastic temperature changes will help reduce the amount of frosting that will appear along the tops and sides of the candles.

Tips Tuesday: Caring for your wooden wick candle

Tuesday means Tips Tuesday!  Today’s tips are about properly caring for your wooden wick candle!

At Cavill & Wicks our only wooden wick candle is currently our Cashmere Pine & Scotch, but it’s a good one and we want to make sure you get the most out of this divine holiday candle! The gentle crackle of a wooden wick makes for a very cozy feel, but they can be more tricky than cotton wick candles if you haven’t used them before. There are a few common issues that can cause them not to stay lit at times, but not to worry….these practices will make for a wonderful burning experience with your wooden wick candle!

Tip 1: To light your wooden wick candle, the best technique is to tilt it on an angle and let the flame draw across the wooden wick.

Tip 2: The inaugural burn. Your candles have “wax memory” and once a burn pattern has been established, it’s hard to change. Make sure that your first burn is 1 hour for every inch of candle. Your Cashmere Pine & Scotch candle is approximately 3” wide and thus the first burn should be for about 2-3 hours, or until the wax is melted all the way to the edges of the candle.  If you don’t allow this inaugural burn to reach the edges of the candle, each burn will create a deeper depression around the wick and the edge wax will go to waste. Eventually the centre tunnel will be too deep for fresh oxygen to flow and your candle will have trouble staying lit. (If you are already experiencing this problem, read on).

Tip 3: Keep your wick trimmed and short, and free of smoked, charred bits. A wick trimmer, nail clippers or a wire cutter are all great for trimming the burnt areas of the wooden wick. If your wick is too long, the flame will be unable to reach the fuel of your candle: the wax. Keeping the charred bits trimmed will also prevent a dirty looking wax pool (though even if you have some charred bits, the candle will still smell great so don’t panic).  Make sure your candle cools before trimming.

Tip 4: A tunnelling candle is fixable. While prevention is the best cure, giving it a good long burn so the wax pool evens out can help balance out the tunnelling effect. If your candle won’t stay lit long enough to melt a large wax pool because it’s “drowning” in wax, try using a paper towel or napkin to soak up some of the excess wax while it’s in liquid form.  Removing some of the wax pool to give your wick room to breathe will allow it to burn long enough to create a larger melt pool. BE SURE to keep the paper towel AWAY from the flame to avoid fire hazard.

If you don’t have luck with that, you can attempt to use a spoon to scrape out some of the excess wax around the wick or along the sides of the candle and slowly re-add it (or discard it) as the burn pool balances out. That is a last resort so no guarantees.

Lastly, enjoy every burning minute of that beautiful wooden wick candle. Listen to the gentle cracker, enjoy the soothing holiday fragrance, and sit back and unwind.
