Become A Candle Burning Pro With These Expert Tips!

Burning a candle can be easy, but following proper candle care is also very important for safety guidelines, extending the life of your candle and preventing unsightly cosmetic issues. Here are some of our favourite candle burning tips to help you get the most our of your Cavill & Wicks luxury candles.

TRIM YOUR WICK!

To keep your Cavill & Wicks candle properly trimmed, you should cut it to 1/4 inch before every burn. This helps to avoid too large a burn pool, mushrooming, soot/smoke and an unsafely large flame. It will help you to prolong the life of your candle to it's maximum burn times. To easily trim your cotton or wooden wick you can use nail clippers, sharp scissors or our beautiful wick trimmers.

GET THE BURN POOL RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!

To create the perfect burn pool so you aren't wasting any of that glorious smelling wax, be sure to let your candle burn for 1 hour per inch in diameter, especially for the first burn. For example, Cavill & Wicks 9oz candle has a diameter of approximately 3 inches, therefore the the initial burn time should be about 2-3 hours. This will ensure that the wax on the sides isn't left unmelted. Do not burn your candle for longer than 3 hours at a time as this can create higher temperatures that will decrease the life of your candle.

A MUSHROOMING WICK & CANDLE BURN TIMES

Mushrooming wicks are not uncommon but should be avoided. While they are mostly a cosmetic issue, a mushrooming wick is a result of a carbon buildup which happens when the flame is consuming more than it can burn at one time.

To avoid a mushrooming wick, be sure to trim your wick before every single burn, do not burn your candle for more than 2-3 hours at a time and keep your candle away from moving air.

CANDLE SWEATING & OIL RELEASE

Candle sweating is completely normal with natural wax blends. This is purely cosmetic & will not affect the performance of your candle. This happens with temperature change during shipping or storing your candle. When the temperature of the candle fluctuates, the natural oils can separate from the coconut & soy wax blend and create some sweating or pooling of oil on the top of the candle. If this happens, you can use a paper towel (when the candle is NOT lit) and wipe away excess oil for aesthetic purposes. Keep your candle away from sunlight and in a cool location to avoid excess sweating.

LUMPY TOPS AFTER BURNING

Rough or lumpy tops after burning your candle is purely a cosmetic issue and is indicative of a natural wax candle. It doesn't always happen but when it does it's because hot wax in the burn pool solidifies at different rates. This is normal and will not affect the performance of your Cavill & Wicks candles.

BLOOMING OR CRYSTALIZING

All natural coconut & soy wax candles will bloom or crystallize at some point in their shelf life. These crystals form as part of the soy wax and it is a completely normal process in the life of a natural wax candle.

SMOKING CANDLES WHILE BURNING

If your candle is smoking while burning it is likely that your wick is too long/big or that your candle is sitting near moving air. This happens when there is not enough oxygen to properly burn the candles fuel (wax). Bursts of air can cause smoking so be sure to keep your candle away from open windows, air vents, etc.
